The sustainable supply of increasingly scarce raw materials is one of the global challenges of our time, says German Federal Environment Minister Dr. Barbara Hendricks in the industry magazine recyclingnews. The reigning Pope Francis in his encyclical published for Pentecost 2015 uses even more drastic words: "The earth seems to be turning more and more into an immense rubbish tip", is written there.
But the solution – a comprehensive utilisation of waste, the elimination of waste incineration plants as well as the recovery of the existing resources through recycling – is within sight. Thanks to trans-industry and trans-national cooperation it is now possible to close cycles fully and thus effectively re-supply secondary raw materials back into production. This is where the business model of the ALBA Group comes into play.
Together with the Fraunhofer Institute UMSICHT, in the current study “resources SAVED by recycling” we put the conservation of resources through our recycling activities in comparison to primary production to the test. Through the recirculation of around 6 million tonnes of recyclables in 2014 we achieved a total saving of over 48.3 million tonnes of primary resources.
